History

Holy Cross Home (Frail Care Centre) came into being in 1984 with the closure of Holy Cross Nursing Home (Maternity Hospital). The idea among other things came as a response to the need for an old age home for the retired, sick Holy Cross Sisters.

The beginning of Holy Cross Home
However from the onset Holy Cross Home has been a home to many lay elderly and sick people. It was registered as an old age home for 64 White persons in 1985.

Alongside this service was a training program for Pupil Nursing Auxiliaries a service that gave foundation and provided opportunities/stepping stones for many young black women in the Health Profession. Unfortunately due to staffing and financial constraints this service was discontinued in 1995.

Holy Cross Home today
In 1994 being true to the Gospel, the teaching of the Catholic Church and the Spirit of our Founders the Home changed its admission policy, our doors opened to all those who were in need of our service irrespective of colour, culture and religious beliefs. It also changed from being an old age home and became a Frail Care Centre.
